Since at least 2015, I've been making (and helping other folks make) teeny little books known in some circles as "foldables" and more widely in the world as zines. I've made them as miniature field journals, with little kids to help them identify animal tracks, clouds, and bird species, and so on. I recently returned to making zines as an art form, and when I showed a dear kiddo in my life how to make them, he made one awesome enough to be accepted into the Seattle Printers Guild's six-month pop-up zine shop in Seattle, WA.
In case you or a kid/adult in your life would like a delightful, simple, and very cheap format for art-making and nature watching, here are my notes on and templates for making the simplest type of zine/foldable book. You'll just need a single sheet of 8.5x11" paper and you're on your way!
