Researcher. Leader. Catalyst.
Current Research & Projects
My goal is to enhance ethical leadership capacity in science communication, science, and academia. To do so, I conduct research on:
-
mechanisms to enhance scientists’ communications skills, and
-
mechanisms of ethical, transdisciplinary leadership, research, and teaching to foster civic engagement with science.

Research to Enhance Ethical Scicomm Capacity in Institutions & Individuals
Communication is the top job skill required across all sectors. Yet, most scientists report feeling ill-equipped to share science effectively beyond academia. This should be no surprise: the training necessary to gain competency in sharing and co-producing science ethically is rarely included in undergraduate and graduate training or early-career faculty mentoring programs. To address this gap, I use research, trainings, and coaching to build individuals' and institutions' scicomm and social change capacity. Details -->

Researching How to Make Institutional Change Possible
Although individual scientists, universities, professional societies, and major funders are committed to discipline-spanning work and the ethical conduct and sharing of science, related initiatives are falling short in STEM and academia, and innovation programs haven’t informed STEM practices as much as hoped. I lead research-driven programs and facilitate strategic planning processes aiming to help us build academics' capacity to change their institutions to rectify these issues. Details -->

Researching How to Help Scientists Use Creativity to Improve Our Communities
I study and facilitate art-science integration to foster creativity and transdisciplinary work that will make a difference in researchers' own communities. My own research and practice includes drawing and illustration, ceramics, creative writing, and more. Through this work, I demonstrate the value of fully integrating the arts into science inquiry, training, and communication. Details -->

Invited Talks, Training & Coaching
I give engaging talks on intersections of scicomm, art-science integration & organizational change.
I lead hands-on, evidence-based workshops and trainings on ethical and effective scicomm, art-science synergies, ethical leadership in science/academia, academic writing, and enhancing mentorship.

Writing is a key component of scicomm, academic change, and academic success. My book -- Teaching and Mentoring Writers in the Sciences -- offers instructors and mentors crucial, evidence-based support for fostering effective writers.

My courses are transdisciplinary and grounded in the research literature of scicomm, engaged scholarship, and institutional change. I post all my syllabi as resources connecting research to practice.

I have created a multi-faceted collection of resources that provide tools and advice on these topics, including books, guides, and the archives of my blog/newsletter/ whathaveyou -- School of Good Trouble. With these materials, I aim support others doing this work, too.
